About NASS

The North American Spine Society (NASS) is a global multidisciplinary medical society that utilizes education, research and advocacy to foster the highest quality, ethical, value- and evidence-based spine care for patients.  It was antedated by creation of the North American Spine Association in 1984 which aimed to include orthopedist, neurosurgeons, radiologists, rheumatologists, physiatrists, etc. who devoted 50% of their practice to the care of the spine.  Concurrently in the same year, the “American College of Spinal Surgeons” (ACSS) was incorporated with the goal of establishing an educational organization dedicated to the advancement of spinal surgery.  The latter would be closely allied with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.  In the same year, another group of spinal physicians would create the “North American Spine Association” (NASA) which was immediately changed to “North American Lumbar Spine Association” (NALSA).  The following year saw the merger of these mushrooming organizations with special interests in spine care.  In 1985, the North American Spine Society was officially formed with the merger of the American College of Spinal Surgeons and the North American Lumbar Spine Association and adopted the logo:

In 1985 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of NASS a new logo was adopted. This will be the very first time that NASS will set foot in the Philippines on the occasion of the 5th ASEAN MISST in Manila.

Message from the President

As President of NASS, I am honored to see the ongoing collaboration with the ASEAN MISST continue and grow stronger. Although NASS has always been involved in many global meetings and having many other societies at our own annual meeting, we noticed an increase in our international membership around 2012. We have made a concerted effort to foster our international collaborations and educational activities, based on our increasing international membership, and an increased interest from other global societies in having NASS participate in their annual meetings and conferences.

NASS has always been dedicated to improving patient care through innovative research, education, and appropriate treatments, and this extends on an international basis. We are very excited to participate in the 5th ASEAN MISST that will be held in the Philippines, and feel that this ongoing collaboration is an exciting way to exchange ideas, disseminate new research and current treatments, and to promote appropriate spine care for all of our patients. I am looking forward to an exciting meeting and an opportunity to continue to foster our friendships with our international colleagues.
